Author James Swanson, author of the bestseller Manhunt, has come up with a unique idea in writing a junior version of the same book for young readers regarding the hunt for John Wilkes Booth, murderer of President Abraham Lincoln. This book should be riveting reading for the young reader who may tend to find American history boring. History is about people, and people are always an interesting subject. Swanson skillfully brings out the personalities of the individuals involved in the story along with the frustrations that Booth and co-conspirator David Herold experienced on their flight to freedom. Sepia-colored photos of the principle characters also are provided along with a map of the route traveled in the back of the book. I used a folder I recently purchased at Ford's Theatre of Booth's escape route that proved to be invaluable to me. I would hope that other authors would pick up on Swanson's idea of writing exciting history geared down to the interests level of middle school and even younger students. Swanson's young niece provided suggestions as to what vocabulary words would be more appropriate to young readers. I have read Manhunt and thoroughly enjoyed it, and this young people's version provided me with a quick review of the this infamous incident in American history.
The intensity of the book was something I enjoyed. The book took us through the story of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination and the capture of John Booth. From the shot to the capture, this book was so precise on the facts of the event. For example, on the same night of Lincoln’s assassination, Booth’s accomplices had plans to attack other state officials. There are a few things I did not enjoy about this book. It was a little slow in the middle as Booth and his accomplice were siting in the woods. The story jumped around a little while they were transitioning characters, which could get a little confusing. Otherwise, it was a very enjoyable book. If you like history, you would love this book. I am not big on history, but it kept me interested with all the action. Someone who enjoys thrillers or suspense, would also think it is great. People from 10 to 80 could find something interesting in the pages. I recommend it.
One of the most tragic moment's from our nation's history, it's a must-read for middle grade readers who will be drawn to thrilling scenes of assassins stalking their prey, and later as the tables are turned the assassins becoming the stalked. Most will also appreciate that Swanson doesn't hold back on the graphic details of the crimes themselves... or at least my sixth grader appreciate them, year after year. It's a fairly high reading level... the content and reading level probably make it inadvisable for most elementary grade readers. Most middle grade readers will eat it up though. It serves as a great entry point for study of the Civil War and/or Reconstruction, or just as great read.
This is by far the best account of what transpired throughout the country during and after John Wilkes Booth killed our president. Swanson gives a very detailed experience of this event in United States history. For example, he gives us details of every place Booth traveled to. This gives us the best visualization of Booth's travels and experiences. This book also gives a fast paced setting and reading. This book gives you a very interesting novel-like storyline. Swanson takes this book and makes it seem as if it was dreamed up overnight. This is a very interesting piece of artwork. For example, Swanson makes this about as entertaining as Billy the Kid stories, which I find very entertaining. Just the story of a manhunt entertains me very much. In conclusion, this book is very riveting and deserves five stars.
Amazing recounting. Interesting and a great read for middle/high school students.
As a serious work of literature or even history, the book disappoints me. There is no flair. The writing is accurate, but plain. Character development is virtually nonexistent . A decent coverage of the plain historic facts.
Chasing Lincoln's Killer is a fast-paced thriller describing the search for John Wilkes Booth. You will find yourself on a chase that takes you from the streets of Washington, D.C. through the swamps of Maryland and on to the forests of Virginia. You will see history in a new light as you enjoy the manhunt. I started reading it and stopped when the book ended. I took it to my classroom and offered it to one boy who was interested in history. I did not get the book back until the end of the year as it was passed from student to student, each of them enjoying the book in his own way. It was fun to watch them enjoying a book like this one. I highly recommend Chasing Lincoln's Killer!
I ordered the audiobook version and it was a great price. Good book. Required reading and was a nice compliment to having the paper version. Got the audio version because we are always on go, and kids get car sick reading in car.
Very informative but can be a little confusing at times for my son. There were quite a few people involved in Lincoln's murder.
