Food over Medicine: The Conversation That Could Save Your Life

Nearly half of Americans take at least one prescription medicine, with almost a quarter taking three or more, as diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and dementia grow more prevalent than ever. The problem with medicating common ailments, such as high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol, is that drugs treat symptoms - and may even improve test results - without addressing the cause: diet.

Overmedicated, overfed, and malnourished, most Americans fail to realize the answer to lower disease rates doesn't lie in more pills but in the foods we eat. With so much misleading nutritional information regarded as common knowledge, from "everything in moderation" to "avoid carbs", the average American is ill-equipped to recognize the deadly force of abundant, cheap, unhealthy food options that not only offer no nutritional benefits but actually bring on disease.

In Food over Medicine, Pamela A. Popper, PhD, ND, and Glen Merzer invite the listener into a conversation about the dire state of American health - the result of poor nutrition choices stemming from food politics and medical misinformation. But more importantly, they share the key to getting and staying healthy for life.

Backed by numerous scientific studies, Food over Medicine details how dietary choices either build health or destroy it. Food over Medicine reveals the power and practice of optimal nutrition in an accessible way.

I think this is the greatest and life altering book I have ever read!!! I had been on my own path to finding these same answers, of taking charge of my health when doctors wouldn't do it, and this book confirms everything I was discovering. I was diagnosed with hashimoto's thyroiditis and was put of medication I was told I would always have to take. I got sicker and sicker until I was barely the walking dead, hardly going through the motions of living. When doctors wouldn't do anything about it, I did my own research. I adopted a vegan diet (initially for the love of animal animals, and secondly for my health) and my auto immune disease went into remission and I never felt so good! Then I back slid and started eating dairy again and all my symptoms started coming back. After only a couple of days of cutting the dairy, the symptoms began to recede again. Makes sense to me. I also haven't taken any medication in 2 years now. After reading this book, I don't know why anyone, myself included, would want to eat your way into sickness. It is a learning process to change your eating, but if you've ever felt your health decline it is worth re-educating yourself. This book is amazing and I wish every single person knew this information! Thank you to the authors for getting this information to the public!!!

As a family physician caring for patients with the typical and epidemic chronic conditions that plague America (e.g. high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, obesity), and as someone who himself until one year ago ate a fairly typical American diet, I have to say that learning about a whole foods, plant-based diet has had a most profound impact on both my personal and professional life. Learning about this way of eating approximately one year ago has helped me personally lose 80 pounds, reduce my own health risks for chronic conditions, while leading me to transform the way I practice medicine. I now view many, if not most chronic conditions as preventable and reversible through this lifestyle, and I have found tremendous satisfaction in helping my patients see the light and take this journey themselves. With this new passion, I have a new yearning to learn as much as I can about this unfortunately missing piece of my medical training. When I first came across “Food Over Medicine” by Popper and Merzer, I was intrigued by both the message of the title and by the style of the book in the form of a conversation between the two authors. From the opening paragraphs, the book captivated me; I felt as if I was sitting on a sofa with the authors, listening to a most fascinating and important conversation about the food we eat and how it affects our health. There is a degree of candidness in this conversation that is very telling of the industries and politics involved. I found myself often wondering, “Why haven’t we been told all of this before?”In addition to the conversation style of the book, which makes it quite enjoyable to read, there is a very logical flow and progression to the topics. Add to that the light humor of the talented interviewer, Merzer, along with the honest and often hard-hitting, eye-opening truth telling of Popper, and you have a book that is very difficult to put down. There is also a depth to the conversation that leaves the reader with a very profound, thought provoking understanding of this most important and timely topic which ultimately affects us all in so many ways. Why is it that we spend the most money on health care in the world yet our people are amongst the unhealthiest?Excellent job, Merzer and Popper! Thanks for writing this – you have done a great deed for the health of our society at a time when this book is needed most!Steven Lawenda, MD

The entire book is written in interview format. I could not get though the first chapter. No real information, just pro-vegetarian, anti-animal products. Very skewed. Lots of complaining with no real advice. Seems like an advertisement for the author’s program. I would return it but I paid about $8 for the book, and it would cost $6 to ship back. The book description is deceptive, intentionally or not. Disappointed in this purchase.

This is a very intelligent and well written book about a subject that all too few of us are aware--the connection between what we eat and our health. And they rightly point out the upcoming disaster which health care (i.e. sickness care) will become if we continue down the path of government subsidies for unhealthy food, the largely unchanging American eating habits, and our individual finite capacity for our bodies undoing the wrong we do to them.Of course, with me she is preaching to the choir--I stopped eating animal products almost completely six years ago, and feel great--at 73 years old.Al DavisAuthor, The Diet FallaciesAvailable on Amazon
